Robin Wilson is a freelance geospatial software engineer and data scientist who works with companies ranging from tiny community organisations to massive multinationals, helping them to solve their geospatial and map-data related problems. Amongst other things, he has developed large cloud-based systems for storing, processing and visualising petabytes of satellite images and built geodatabase software for use by the Royal Navy to store ship locations. He had a winding career path to get here, starting with a Year in Industry working on software to control nuclear power stations, progressing through a Geography degree and a PhD to a role in academia, and then setting up his own freelancing business. Alongside this, he became disabled and has had to adjust his work to accommodate his health.

In this talk, Robin will extract some of the key lessons he’s learnt from his diverse career, will review the key things he did 10-15 years ago that set him up for success now, and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of working as a freelancer.
